At least 15 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) were killed following several armed clashes with the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the province of Patikul, Sulu on Monday, August 29.

An Army officer with the rank of lieutenant was among the casualties on the government side, GMA News reported.

According to AFP Public Affairs Office chief Marine Col. Edgard Arevalo, two battalions from the Philippine Army engaged an estimated 120 ASG members in a firefight.

Arevalo also said Army reinforcements made sure to provide support to ground forces against the retreating ASG members.

Reports on the clash have yet to state the number of casualties the ASG suffered but one of their sub-leaders, Jamiri Jawong Jauhari, was apparently killed.

Pursuit operations are currently ongoing against the ASG.

The incident comes after President Rodrigo Duterte asked the AFP to destroy the notorious bandit group following their beheading of a teen captive last week.

Duterte stated that he was shutting down all possible peace talks with the ASG after he lost respect for them for their brutal acts against their victims.
