While the strong-arming of a news organization has been the biggest local headline recently, free press is also being threatened on the other side of the world.

In a twist of irony, US President Donald Trump just led the way in calling out "a very biased media" via the Republican Party's 2017 Fake News Awards.

"2017 was a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage, and even downright fake news. Studies have shown that over 90% of the media's coverage of President Trump is negative," the blog entry read on GOP's official website.

It cited 10 alleged false reports as "winners," like that viral clip of Trump overfeeding fish and the Russia collusion. Adding insult to injury, the article ended with a list of accomplishments by the current administration.

The hashtag "FakeNewsAwards" even trended on Twitter, and the resulting traffic caused the Republican site to crash. Some netizens mockingly congratulated the news outlets in question, particularly CNN, which received the most mentions with four.
