Afternoon rain showers, though troublesome (especially for the lot of us who’ve yet to remember to bring an umbrella everyday), should be the least of our concerns at the moment. [firstpara] To put things bluntly, his week hasn't been very good.

There's the string of weekend accidents involving our very own Paulene So, Jahziel Manabat Karen Bordador, Jem Milton, and Angel Malit and Bb. Pilipinas-International Melody Gersbach, and then the horrible, horrible hostage incident Monday.

Venus Raj winning the Miss Universe Title could have been a face-save for our country. Instead, it became a comic relief of sorts. Don't get us wrong; Her placing 4th is a proud, proud moment, nonetheless.

But as Lea Salonga has sung before and has made us believe, “the sun will come up tomorrow." Hopefully the events that have transpired could also be a catalyst for making better our procedures in crisis time.

As a start, let’s take a look at all the good news hidden within the pith of the media’s continuing coverage of the hostage crisis. First of all…

1. The Philippines is in a list that doesn’t scream “poor” or “hopeless”
In 2005, a global investment banking institution, Goldman-Sachs, identified the next eleven countries that were seen to have the most potential in becoming one of the world’s largest economies by the year 2050.

The Philippines is one of them, along with Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam.

Goldman-Sachs looked at macroeconomic stability, political maturity, openness of trade and investment policies as barometers. Apparently, the Philippines is showing signs that we do have the potential to become a major, major player soon enough. It goes without saying, that we all do have a part to play in realizing that potential.
