The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said the Abu Sayyaf might launch an assault on Metro Manila following their recently intensified military operations against the terrorist group.

AFP spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla however said that although the attack was indeed possible, it was also unlikely, GMA News reported.

"There is no specific threat but these are possible scenarios which we are ready to respond to... Worst case scenario ito na pinaghahandaan natin, so better prepared than not," he said.

Padilla also appealed to the public to be vigilant of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to authorities to deter possible threats.

"It's better, and we can safely safeguard our communities, if everyone cooperates and help each other so the security coverage becomes multiplied a thousand times by an alert and cooperative citizenry," he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte has recently ordered an additional five battalions consisting of 2,500 soldiers to provide reinforcement to the initial force sent in Sulu to handle the Abu Sayyaf.

This comes after Monday when at least 15 soldiers were killed in several armed engagements with the terrorist group.
