Guys, Archie Andrews is dead.
"Wait, whaaat? Archie the redhead comics guy is dead?"
Yeah. After 74 years of making us laugh at our own teenage issues, he kicked the bucket for real. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and his wife, Veronica.
BUT WHY? BUT HOW?
Archie saves his gay friend Kevin Keller from an assassination attempt in Life With Archie #36, which was released in the US earlier today.
Kevin, who has his own comic series in his namesake like Betty and Veronica, is a senator campaigning for gay rights and against gun possession since his husband was also shot dead.
“Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us—he’s a hero, good-hearted, humble and inherently honorable. This story is going to inspire a wide range of reactions because we all feel so close to Archie. Fans will laugh, cry, jump off the edge of their seats and hopefully understand why this comic will go down as one of the most important moments in Archie’s entire history. It’s the biggest story we’ve ever done, and we’re supremely proud of it,” said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO.
WHAT DO WE DO NOW? WHAT DO WE DO NOW?!
Sure, main character deaths aren’t exactly new to comics, but Archie doesn’t have superpowers, so he can’t be resurrected! Well, we guess we should all accept it, embrace it, and move on?
Some die-hard fans have actually petitioned Goldwater to save Archie ever since rumors about the main character’s death spread last month. But it still happened. Sino nang aasarin ni Reggie?! Sino nang bibili ng meryenda ni Jughead?! #TooLateTheHero
BUT WHAT ABOUT BETTY, VERONICA, AND THE COMIC BOOK STAFF?
Archie only dies in the series Life With Archie, where the characters Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the rest of the gang live their lives as adults. The rest of the series, like Archie Classics (where they’re high school students forever), Betty and Veronica, Kevin Keller, and Jughead, continue to live their normal lives with Archie.
Move on dude! Even superheroes aren’t exempted from heartbreaking deaths! After epic battles with mortal enemies, intergalactic races, and historical world wars, there’s always a chance that a hero or one of his loved ones will get killed in action.
