So, what do we call you?
You can call me Val kasi Valerie ako. I’m also used to being called Bangs. Kahit nga yung mga kaibigan ko na Val tawag sa akin dati, Bangs na rin tawag sa akin ngayon.
Until when will we see you on the small screen in Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal?
It was supposed to run for 13 weeks, but since they said it was doing well, it was extended.
Great! And you’re game to do all the required sexy scenes?
When I had to do my first kissing scene for Palos, kinabahan talaga ako. Plus, nagalit yung dad ko—he didn’t know that I was going to do that. But now, okay na dad ko, he knows doing these things are part of my job. And mas ready na talaga ako ngayon, even to do love scenes. Dati rin may inhibitions pa ako with myself, ngayon mas confident na ako.
What exactly was on your mind while doing your first kissing scene?
It was the most nerve-racking experience. I mean, yeah sure, I’ve had a boyfriend, so I’ve kissed a guy. Pero kissing is such a private thing. While doing the scene, hindi mo na nga iisipin yung taong nasa harap mo, mas conscious ka sa other people who are watching you. Pero ngayon okay na lang sa akin yun, I’m already used to the idea that it’s all acting, and that it’s part of the job. But of course, the scene should be essential to the story line and hindi lang pangdagdag ng lust factor sa show.
So, magkano ang iyong dangal?
Ha ha ha! Priceless! But when you say “dangal,” it doesn’t mean na laman yung binebenta mo.
Can you relate to your character?
Well, except for the pagbebenta ng laman part, I kind of can relate to my role as Carmela. Walang pagbebenta ng puri na nangyayari ha, ha ha! Naging breadwinner kasi ako ng family namin, Just like Carmela, our family also used to have a leather business. In the story, nasunog yung negosyo nila, while sa amin naman, na-bankrupt.
Is your story telenovela-worthy, too?
Our business went bankrupt mainly because of the entry of synthetic leather in the market. Pero yung mas masakit is when there was this Indian investor na nakuha yung loob ng may-ari ng building that we were leasing. We were in that building for how many years, but that investor offered the landlord thrice the amount of what we were paying them. Ang masama nun, parang wala kaming pinagsamahan. We were just booted out of the building, kaya ang sama-sama talaga ng loob ko. When that happened, I was already here in Manila, so I was clueless about it. Ayaw kasi ipaalam ng dad ko. But when I found out, that’s when I stepped up as breadwinner of the family. Although he’s in Saudi now working as an engineer, natulungan ko siyang makalipad papunta dun.
