Overall, 2016 had been a cruel year for famous and influential people, particularly fallen icons in the music industry such as David Bowie and Prince.

George Michael was the latest casualty—ironically spending his "Last Christmas" this year—and it would've driven us crazy if pop icon Britney Spears was next in line, if earlier reports were true.

Sony Music, via its official Twitter account, supposedly posted, "RIP @britneyspears :( #RIPBritney 1981-2016," only to follow up with another major oops and doing it again with: "britney spears is dead by accident! We will tell you more soon #RIPBritney :("

Lucky for us, the outrageous news was all a hoax and that the Princess of Pop is very much alive and well. Apparently, Sony Music's Twitter was hacked and someone else wrote the distressing digital epitaph.

Her representative has since addressed the false update, and good thing the issue was resolved before it could turn into one, big circus.

As for Britney herself, she looks far from toxic, even stronger in her recent Instagram posts.

Thank goodness she can continue giving us more of those tempting throwbacks and precious pieces of her.
