3 Budget-Friendly Staycation Accomodations In Poblacion, Makati

Instead of taking her to a skeevy motel, why not curate an overnight date at a decent hotel in town (but out of sight)?

Poblacion is the old downtown area of Makati. The area is seeing a resurgence with its evolution from red light district to a veritable traveler’s hub filled with decent budget accommodations, good food, and affordable bars. The red light district's grittiness is also what gives the area its charm. If foreigners and travelers enjoy the area, so should you.

And in case you need a staycation, FHM sought out three places for you. These hotels fulfill the criterion of enhancing a memorable overnight (or day stay): real beds (not that cheap foam crap), good air conditioning, decent WiFi, a flatscreen TV for some white noise, and a you-don’t-need-mismatched-slippers bathroom with hot water and enough space to enjoy shower time with your ladylove.

Bottomline is, you and your girl deserve a real mattress with real linen, real pillows, minus the fear of communicable disease. Let’s work with a budget of about PHP 3,000. Don’t bother with a vehicle for this trip, parking is stressful. Pack your overnight bags, take an Uber or a Grab, and get your cute asses to Poblacion, Makati for a Saturday night out (or should we say in?).

1) San Agustin Residences

The interesting thing about the San Agustin Residences is that the place gives you a sense of how Poblacion was in the old days, so it’s like spending the weekend at a vacation house guest room. This is where to go if discretion is essential or if you're not a fan of the city's hustle and bustle. You don’t need to use a credit card to book as they accept bank deposits via BPI. Location is strategic but tucked away, as it’s on San Agustin St. near the corner of P. Burgos St., and it’s a quick walk to A. Venue Mall, Century City, or even Powerplant. The USP (unique selling point) for this property? PHP 1,185 a night. Plus there’s a mini-fridge and a hot water kettle if you’re in need of refreshments post-nookie.

San Agustin Residences is No. 19 out of 34 on Trip Advisor’s Best B&B’s in Makati. After Action Review on this property? “It gets the job done.” And that’s a direct quote from a voluptuous female colleague who smirks when asked about the place.

2) Red Planet Makati, Manila

This Kalayaan St. based property is part of the Red Planet Hotels chain and that speaks for itself. As Trip Advisor’s No. 24 out of 80 hotels in Makati, you’ll get consistency in terms of: good service, basic but clean accommodations, and Disney’s Frozen levels air conditioning.

The best way to describe Red Planet is that it’s like Uber with ADD surge pricing. So you have to aggressively monitor pricing, which can be as affordable as PHP 1,300 during the week to around PHP  1,800 on a weekend. They'll be busy though, so best to book early. Consistency is the appeal for this property, unlike booking on AirBnB, Red Planet will have less variables to worry about and the Goldilocks comfort beds and rainfall showers are very, very conducive. Visiting lady friend from out of town or country? Book it. Gain RememberRED points while you’re at it.

3) Hotel Durban

Hotel Durban is the Titos of Manila go-to. It’s billed as a ‘true boutique hotel,’ right down to the larger than life black horse sitting in the hotel cafe. Currently at No. 17 out of 80 hotels in Makati, Hotel Durban has a listed price range between PHP 1,700 to PHP 2,600, but is currently offering a PHP 500 discount on all rooms as there’s construction going on between 10 AM and 5 PM. And that’s not a bad thing. Check in at noon, then go out for lunch. By the time you’re done hanging out, the inhouse cafe Farfalla will be serving drinks at 50% off. Have a sundowner then head up to your room for some private time.
