To show support for the Duterte administration’s anti-illegal drugs campaign, incoming House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez pushed for drug testing of all House of Representatives members, including their staff.
Alvarez was throwing support behind a measure filed by Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers that called for mandatory drug testing of all members of the House, InterAksyon reported.
“‘Pag wala ka namang problema, bakit hindi ka magda-drug test?” said the next leader of Congress.
However, Alvarez prefers a voluntary drug test, saying that no one should fear the move unless they are guilty of using illegal substance.
He added that this move will allow lawmakers to set as an example for the Duterte admin’s "My God, I hate drugs" campaign, the Philstar reported.
Still, Alvarez needs to seek the House consensus on whether his fellow lawmakers prefer a mandatory or a voluntary drug test.
The incoming House Speaker is following in the footsteps of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, who earlier ordered a surprise drug test administered to its top officials.
The drug test yielded 11 positive results which disappointed Dela Rosa.
