A private individual has proven the existence of the controversial BPI bank account allegedly under the name of Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

In a post by journalist Ellen Tordesillas, she shared the deposit slip of a friend of hers who went to a BPI branch today to verify whether Senator Antonio Trillanes IV's exposé against Duterte was true.

Trillanes recently claimed that Duterte actually had P211 million stashed in a bank account in Metro Manila back in 2014.

He also presented documents showing the alleged payment transfers to the account ranging from P16 to P55 million.

But Duterte’s camp labeled the documents as “fabricated” while Duterte himself denied its existence.

“The account is not true and is just a fabrication of [Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV], who is a money for hire… I will not play into their hands by issuing a waiver. The account is nonexistent,” Duterte told the Inquirer.

The major issue about this controversy is not actually the millions that the account probably contains but Duterte’s failure to declare his proper assets in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).

Duterte only declared a net worth of close to P22 million in his 2014 SALN.

Possible charges for misdeclaration of SALN include perjury and violation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards which may result in dismissal from government service.
