Amid public outcry for the widespread manslaughter that started when he assumed office, President Rodrigo Duterte managed to keep his cool and even cracked a joke regarding the issue.
In a fellowship dinner with San Beda College of Law alumni in Malacañang over the weekend, Duterte told his batchmates in jest about his plans to grant himself pardon after his term, ABS-CBN News reported.
"So pag-alis ko ng Malacañang, dito, magpirma ako, 'Pardon is hereby granted to Rodrigo Duterte. Signed, Rodrigo Duterte.' Eh brains lang naman yan," he joked.
The President, who is adamant on killing drug pushers, added that he could not even serve time in prison anymore when he bows out of power due to age—he would be 77 years old.
On a more serious note, Philstar noted that Duterte said he will use the presidential pardon for cops who will be convicted for killing criminals in the line of duty.
He also said he will do everything in his ability to protect law enforcers who uphold his war against drugs.
Earlier, the Commission on Human Rights expressed alarm over the growth in the number of deaths that occurred when Duterte became president.
Senator Leila de Lima, for her part, urged her colleagues to probe the rampant extrajudicial killings.
