Davao City Mayor Rodridgo Duterte has apologized to Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra for hurling expletives at Pope Francis last November.

The tough-talking mayor humbled himself in an uncharacteristic move during a courtesy call to Navarra’s home, Philstar reported.

“Monsignor, I am Rodrigo Duterte, I’m a Catholic. I just want to convey and I’d like to ask for forgiveness from everybody. It was never my intention to dishonor the pope,” said Duterte.

Navarra responded by saying he has already forgiven him.

“But then you went to the Bishop’s House in Davao and explained yourself... I believe that cleared your name. The issue has died down,” replied the bishop, and added that Duterte should redeem himself by proving his worth to the country if he wins the 2016 polls.

The highly popular Duterte drew flak from the public when he apparently cursed at the Pope for the massive traffic jam caused by the papal visit last January 2015.

He then backpedaled and explained he was only expressing his frustration over the traffic situation, claiming that he was stuck for five hours on the road during the said event.

Duterte is the standard-bearer of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Laban Party and is pushing for a platform that focuses on an anti-criminality and corruption movement.
