Once again, President Rodrigo Duterte is at the receiving end of criticism after he said in jest over the weekend that he spanked the rears of his personal female security police escorts.
Duterte made the remark during a speaking engagement with fellow San Beda College of Law alumni on Saturday, ABS-CBN reports.
“Ako palabiro ako. Pati iyang mga babaeng pulis, pinaghahampas ko iyan, iyung pwet, ginaganoon ko. Diyan sa Malacañang, pag mainit ulo ko, dala ko folder ko, isa ka pa,” he said.
Among Duterte’s female security aides include Sofia Loren Deliu, a former model and Miss PH Earth candidate who is otherwise known as the beauty queen cop.
Needless to say, the President’s remarks didn’t sit well with Senator Risa Hontiveros, who recently filed three bills to counter violence and sexual harassment against women.
The neophyte senator said in a statement that the spanking comment in particular—especially since it came from a top ranking official—indirectly promotes the harassment of women, the Inquirer reports.
“We live in a period where the culture of rape, sexual harassment and male sexual violence is prevalent, made worse by the dishonorable behavior of some of our elected national leaders who lend their voices to the gross blatant objectification of all women,” she said.
In the past weeks, various women from regular citizens protesting the Marcos burial to top government officials like Senator Leila de Lima and even Vice President Leni Robredo fell prey to sexual harassment.
