President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has issued a stern warning to the employees of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs (BOC) asking them to cease their alleged corrupt practices immediately.
According to him, these agencies that both deal with large amounts of money have been swallowed by rampant corrupt practices, all the way down to entry-level workers, the Manila Times reported.
“I don’t want to offend anybody and no particular person is the target when I say the BIR is an institution known to be corrupt,” he said.
“Kailangan huminto na kayo [sa kakakurakot]. And for the Bureau of Customs, for the longest time maganda ang buhay ninyo [due to corruption].”
Duterte, instead, advised the employees of the said agencies to go back to their roots and be modest employees serving the public without vested interests.
“Huwag na tayong magbolahan. Diretsahan na tayo. This time you have to change your lifestyle. Less expense...try to be just an ordinary government worker,” he added.
Duterte believes this is the perfect time for them to change since he will be leading the country with an unbiased, anti-corruption campaign.
“If you really want to help your country, now is the time na ako nandiyan. All I ask from you is do not lie to me,” he said.
Last month, Duterte said he would rather abolish instead of reorganizing the BIR, BOC, and the Land Transportation Office, since these are the government agencies which he believes are corrupt to the core.
