Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has shrugged off a top prelate’s apparent swipe at his rape remarks, even urging Catholics not to vote for him by saying they will go straight to hell if they do so.
Duterte made the comment during an election forum at the Iloilo campus of the University of the Philippines, GMA News reported.
“Sundin ninyo ang inyong bishop kasi kung hindi pupunta kayo sa impyerno,” he quipped.
The tough talking mayor was reacting to Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines president Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas’ recent tweet. In his post, Bishop Villegas asked the public whether Duterte, who currently leads poll surveys, is the right choice for the country’s next president. Accompanying the post was the video footage where Duterte uttered his controversial remark on rape.
Mayor Duterte has since been on the receiving end of numerous criticisms and was even referred to by international media as the Philippines’ version of Donald Trump after the video went viral over the weekend.
