The 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit officially starts today!

This year, ASEAN is celebrating its 50 years, which coincides with the Philippines chairmanship. The theme for this year is “Partnering for Change, Engaging the World,” which symbolizes the country’s advocacy to promote unity with and among ASEAN member states and its global partners.

In case you still have no clue what the ASEAN 2017 Summit is all about (aside from the event giving us a long weekend), here's a quick rundown to clue you in on what the fuss is all about.

The Logo

Every event needs a logo. For this year's summit, all the elements of the ASEAN 2017 logo were carefully selected—from the colors, the typeface, to everything else in between—just to capture the vision of ASEAN 2017.

The Purpose

The purpose of the semi-annual event is for ASEAN member states (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and of course, the Philippines), and dialogue partners (Australia, Canada, China, European Union, India, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Russia, and US), to come together to discuss regional and global issues. The Activities

Though the ASEAN Summit Week officially starts today, November 10, the load of activities will pour over the weekend until Wednesday, November 15. Aside from various meetings, conferences, and celebrations, there are many other commemorative activities and side events in store in the next few days.

November 12 (Sunday)

November 13 (Monday)

9 AM, Opening Ceremony of the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, CCP, Manila

There will also be a free concert at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati City, that night. Musical acts from 10 ASEAN member states and top local artists in the country such as Franco, Silent Sanctuary, Parokya Ni Edgar, and more, are set to end the ASEAN 2017 summit with a bang.

Lockdown, No Fly Zones

For the ASEAN Summit week holiday, the government has declared restriction on air operations and lockdowns on certain roads in Metro Manila.

From November 11 to 14, all types of aircrafts, even drones, are banned from flying in parts of Pampanga, specifically in Clarkfield Special Economic and Freeport Zone.

In Metro Manila, a no fly zone up to 10,000 feet above and 4 nm will be implemented around Rizal Park from November 12 to 15. Likewise, the sea operations will also be regulated with restrictions.

A lockdown in roads in Pasay City and in Manila will be implemented from November 8 to 15.
