As those who’ve seen the premiere of Quark Henares’ Rakenrol last Saturday night were reveling in their rock n’ roll high, news about the death of troubled singer Amy Winehouse circulated the internet. [firstpara]

She was 27 years old.

And just like that the news wasn’t just about her death, or how she died (still unexplained as of press time) or what a waste of talent she’s become.

It was about how she, Amy Winehouse, is now a part of the Forever 27 Club.

We know what you’re thinking: What the fuck is the Forever 27 Club?

And who is Amy Winehouse?

Cue in the explainer.

Who is Amy Winehouse?
Amy Jade Winehouse was a British soul singer who will forever be remembered for this almost autobiographical soundbite: “They tried to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no.”

Which is a sad lazy thing to do, too because Amy was a very talented singer, whose efforts had luckily been recognized.

In 2008, she was the Grammy Awards big winner, taking home five of her six nominations, including Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.

Go on, still a little vague.
Okay, Amy Winehouse was also pretty popular for her Beehive hair, quirky tattoos, and her long, ugly battle with drinking, drugs, and eating disorders. She unfortunately became a tabloid favorite for that last bit.

But it’s already 2011. Her last big thing was way back in 2007.
That’s true; she was actually in the studio recording a duets album they had wanted to release later this year. There was supposed to be a 12-day comeback European tour, but that was quickly cancelled because for several dates, Amy appeared too drunk to perform.

How did she die?
While her death is still unexplained, many attribute it to drugs. Reports have it that Amy had OD’d, with the International Business Times saying it was “a death caused by ecstasy and alcohol binge, sources say.”

Hmm, inconclusive! And this Forever 27 Club business? What is it all about?
The Forever 27 Club is the living’s, which is to say our way of referring to the great musicians who passed away at age 27.

Great musicians. Like?
Are you ready? Take a breath. Here goes: Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrisson. Robert Johnson. Janis Joplin. Kurt Cobain. And now, Amy Winehouse. Blind Melon’s Shannon Hoon passed away a year late unfortunately; he was 28. There are many others, still; Spinner lists 15.

Oh wow. But can you even put Amy alongside those greats?
If reports prove true, if Amy indeed died of drug overdose, then that’s something she has in common with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. If it remains to be “unexplained” then, that’s what she shares with Jim Morrison, who died in his bathtub. In any case, intoxication seems to be a common denominator among all of them.

But we’re sure that’s not what you mean. You mean, talent. You mean, things she’s already done in and for the industry. Well, have you heard her sing yet? Amy’s voice was a combination of 60s girl group style, soul, hip-hop, and jazz. And that’s not even saying a lot; the sum is greater than the parts, so to speak. Check out the video of her Grammy performance, where, she performed from London:
