Now that jetlag's over and we’ve settled back down, an exclusive story that will sound like a dream. Last December 8, FHM Philippines found itself amidst members of the media from US, Europe, and Asia at Los Angeles, California.
What were we doing there, we also ask ourselves. But really, Nike was kind enough to fly FHM, along with select members of the media, to LA to witness the unveiling of the Nike Air Zoom Kobe V. We join you in the collective wow.
Oh, but that’s just the beginning. After watching a street ball game at Venice Beach, we bound a bus that brought us to The L.A. Forum, better known as The Great Western Forum, where the new Kobe shoes was premiered.
Before we get to see the shoes however, we suck in the fact that we were at the Forum. Goodness, the place was reeking of greatness. Framed photographs of greatness past lined the walls, reminding those present that this was no ordinary field trip. Slamonline, who was also there, did an inventory: “From Wilt and West to Cap and Magic. No Mike Smrek, though. I check quite thoroughly.”
And then it was time to head down the bowl. While the AC that slapped us cold, it was the set-up that nailed us where we were: half the court was covered in grass while the other-half in hard court.
This demonstrates where the Kobe V is coming from: the football field. Kobe Bryant, who walked from the grass onto the hard court, explained how this low-cut idea came about.
He was sitting at home one day, watching football when it struck him: soccer players put a tremendous amount of pressure on their feet and yet they don’t go playing in high-tops.
Before we preempt anything—the shoes will be made available in February next year, which is when the magazine will run its microscopic look at the Kobe V—let us just say that what you’re ogling at is Nike’s lowest-profile and lightest basketball shoe to date.
“I thought the Kobe IVs were the perfect basketball shoes. And then I put these on…Unbelievable,” The Black Mamba shakes his head. “Nike has done it again.”
