It was confirmed by several new outfits today that former senator and lawyer Joker Arroyo had succumbed late Monday, October 5, to heart attack at a still undisclosed hospital in the United States, He was 88.
Born in Naga, Camarines Sur on Jan. 5, 1927, Arroyo was congressman of Makati for nine years before he became a senator. During his 12-year tenure in the Senate, which ended in 2013, it was said that Joker didn't even touch his P200-million annual Priority Development Assistance Fund or pork barrel allocation.
He is regarded a key figure in both the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution—notably present during street protests—and the impeachment of former President Joseph Estrada in 2000, aside from earning numerous accolades for his contributions on public service and the law profession.
Arroyo is also known for his catchy 2007 campaign slogan, "'Pag bad ka, lagot ka!"
