American singer and songwriter James Taylor has decided to cancel his concert in the country that was initially scheduled for February of next year.

According to the Grammy awardee, he was really looking forward to his Manila concert, but had to make a strong point against the daily extrajudicial killings occurring in the country.

“I don't think of my music as being particularly political but sometimes one is called upon to make a political stand,” he said.

Taylor explained that the rising amount of deaths under the Duterte administration’s war on drugs was already alarming, especially for him.

“Recent reports from the Philippines of summary executions of suspected offenders without trial or judicial process are deeply concerning and unacceptable to anyone who loves the rule of law,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said through a statement that Taylor’s decision was a loss for the singer’s part, ABS-CBN News reports.

“At the end of the day, it is a loss for him to experience the warmth and hospitality of the music-loving Filipino audience and also earn his purse from the concert,” PNP spokesperson Sr. Supt. Dionardo Carlos said.

Other personalities and groups who have voiced out concern over the EJKs are Vice President Leni Robredo, Senator Leila de Lima, the United States, and the United Nations to name a few.

Taylor’s move comes at a time when overall index crime volume in the country went down by 31.67 percent, but murder cases shot up by over 50 percent.

Currently, there are 5,970 cases of EJKs based on recently release PNP data.
