The LGBT community appears to have been both shocked and confused by the recent statement of the tough-talking President who was previously considered by the community as an ally of same-sex marriage, the Inquirer reports.
Over the weekend, Duterte made a statement to the Filipino community in Burma where he basically contradicted his previous leaning for same-sex marriage.
During the event, he explained after citing an item in Time Magazine that same-sex marriage is not possible in the country since we are predominantly Catholic.
“And there is a Civil Code, which says you can only marry a woman to a man. Yan ang batas... Kung saan ka pinuwesto ng Diyos, diyan ka lang,” he said.
This statement was welcomed by the Catholic Church which Duterte is currently at odds with.
Duterte has stated during the campaign period last year that he was open to the idea of same-sex marriage and would consider legalizing it if he won the presidency.
He also said during a talk show interview back in 2015 that same-sex marriage was “good” because “everyone deserves to be happy.”
