Legendary music icon Paul McCartney just reached another milestone. He turned 70 last Monday, June 18! The former Beatle is still very much far from retired and is still making a lot of music (his latest album Kisses on the Bottom was released last February), even doing as much as 32 shows a year. And hey, Paul still has good company in Ringo Starr, who will turn 72 next month. Long live the surviving Beatles!
In lieu of this major event in music history, we handpicked the 10 best Paul McCartney songs to remember him by, from his days with John, George, and Ringo all the way to Wings and back as a seasoned solo artist. Happy birthday, Paul!
”Love Me Do”
Year of release: 1962
Paul's age: 20
Album: Please Please Me
The song was written by Paul while playing truant from school at age 16, and is mostly inspired by the bluesy music of the Everly Brothers. “Love Me Do” was recorded by The Beatles in three different occasions featuring three different drummers – Pete Best, Ringo Starr, and one with session drummer Andy White, all in 1962. All the same, this would be one of the first hits under Paul’s name.
