50 Filipinas Featured In World's Top 500 Female Entrepreneurs

The H&M Foundation has featured a number of Filipinas from various industries ranging from food, services, retail, apparel and health care in their recently released Foundation 500 list.

In a press release, H&M stated that they aim to put the focus on the inspiring stories of women from emerging markets. “H&M Foundation and CARE’s message is that empowering women is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty and create economic growth.”

Meanwhile, H&M Foundation Global Manager Diana Amini lamented on how the last appearance of a woman on the male-dominated Fortune Magazine cover was way back in 2014. She also said their list brings women back to the table in terms of selecting the world’s modern business leaders.

“The entrepreneur is the hero of our time, and it is estimated that over the coming years over 1 billion women will enter the workforce—a majority through entrepreneurship,” she said.

The list features Filipina entrepreneurs like Fe Lopez (Delicacies), Magdalena Francisco (Trading), Jenelyn Patricio (Construction), Susana Machica (Ladies wear), Lolita Atienza (Bags), and Rosemarie Espago (Bamboo furniture), to name a few.


Aside from the Philippines, the other female entrepreneurs in the list hail from countries like Guatemala, Indonesia, Jordan, Nepal, Peru, Sri Lanka and Zambia.

The women who made the list are the most successful entrepreneurs from a global program where 100,000 women in 20 countries were given seed capital and skills training.
