PLDT-Smart And Huawei Promise 5G Internet Network In PH

The country’s largest telco, PLDT, Inc. along with its wireless arm Smart Communications Inc., has partnered up with China’s Huawei with the aim of establishing a 5G network in the Philippines.

The partnership was formed after PLDT President and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan formalized the deal with Huawei Philippines CEO Jacky Gao Kexin, ABS-CBN News reports.

Both agreed to conduct a joint research of the best locations in the country where 5G can first break ground.

“They are one of the companies that are leading in the research and development of 5G technology,” PLDT spokesman Ramon Isberto said.

But the overall plan is to fully establish 5G as an extremely fast while also reliable go-to network in the country. Aside from this, the creation of a showcase network for 5G and an innovation lab is part of the deal.


If all goes well, the 5G network is expected to be rolled out by 2020.

The partnership comes after talks between San Miguel Inc. and Australian internet provider Telstra which plans to enter the Philippine market and provide blazing fast internet fell through last year.
