In a campaign rally in February 2016, outgoing president Noynoy Aquino said: “You can’t put a good Mar down.”
It seems then that Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas isn't going away any time soon, despite losing the bid for the presidency. His supporters are already urging him to run again for the 2022 national elections.
During a thanksgiving party on Wednesday, about 2,000 supporters chanted “2022” while Roxas was delivering a speech, GMA News reported.
“Wala munang ganyan,” the former Interior Secretary told the crowd. Roxas then thanked the audience for their consistent support during the campaign and on Election Day. “Hindi ko made-describe sa inyo 'yong karangalan, 'yong fulfillment, 'yong validation na hinayaan niyo ako magbitbit ng ating bandila nitong nakaraang halalang ito,” he said.
Roxas acknowledged his defeat to president-elect Rodrigo Duterte who beat him with a landslide victory of over 16 million votes, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. “That’s the reality of the elections. This is what democracy is about. That’s what we’re celebrating in this thanksgiving [party]. We still have democracy. We can still stand up here and say what we want,” he said.
Roxas added that the fight is not yet over, telling his supporters to give the same backing for his running mate, Leni Robredo, who won the vice presidential race. “Kailangan natin ipaglaban ang ating bansa. Ipaglaban natin si Leni. Ipaglaban natin tulad noon hanggang sa ngayon, ang katotohanan, ipaglaban natin kung ano ang tama at ipaglaban natin ang ating kinabukasan,” he said.
The event was the first time Roxas was seen in public after the May 9 polls. Other LP stalwarts such as President Aquino, Robredo, and senator-elect Leila de Lima were also present at the party.
