And we have a winner. One lucky anonymous bettor from Olongapo has become 741 million pesos richer after last night’s Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Grand Lotto draw.

It took more than 86 consecutive draws in a period of more than six months before last night’s 11-16-42-47-31-37 number combination finally proved golden—to one person at the very least.

The amount he (she?) won is the highest ever for the local lottery.

As for the rest of us? We’ll all try not to go too green with envy as we all try to break away from this lotto-induced stupor to return to our desk jobs, where we’ll labor for the rest of our lives. We can’t wait.

Know who else we’re as envious of as Mr. Anonymous above? These guys below. Whether it was winning on skill, just plain old dumb luck or a little bit of cheating, these guys won big time, thus freeing them from the bounds of wage-slavery.

Mr. Mega Millions and the Powerball squad
Think 741 million pesos is big? Indeed, that figure is a life-changer. But it also pales in comparison with the largest recorded lottery payout in the world, which is $390 million. The said prize was won in March 6, 2007 at a U.S lottery called Mega Millions.

Unlike the guy who won last night though, the Mega Millions pot was unfortunately split between two winning ticket-holders in the U.S., giving each of them a paltry $116,957,083 (roughly about P5,134,416,125.16). Oh wait, that’s still epic.

Second only to the Mega Millions winner are eight co-workers from a Nebraska meat processing plant, who won the $365 million jackpot from Powerball, another U.S.-based lottery organization.

The eight individuals bought a single ticket, which eventually turned out to be the sole winning ticket during the draw held on February 18, 2006. No word if they murdered each other secretly to get all of the spoils.

John Carpenter: The first millionaire
During the second season of the U.S. version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, John Carpenter became the show’s first million-dollar winner. And from start to finish, it was clear that he wasn’t any ordinary contestant; He breezed through many of the questions.

He almost got through as well without ever using any lifelines, until finally, he reached the final question, which asked which U.S. President appeared in the U.S. comedy show, Laugh In.

So John called his father. But just when people thought he really was stumped for an answer, John said: “Hi dad, I don’t really need your help. I just wanted to let you know that I was going to win the million dollars…because the U.S President who appeared in Laugh In was Richard Nixon, and that’s my final answer.”

How’s that for cocky?
