The Flintstones Will Make a TV Comeback!

There goes our childhood. A reboot of the classic animated series The Flintstones is now in order, and it is being primed by Fox Channel for a 2013 launch. [firstpara]

That means Fred, Wilma, and the whole nine yards will be reintroduced to the new generation.

The Flintstones is a 1960s cartoon created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera about two hard-working middle class families living in a town called Bedrock during the dinosaur era.

Kids might best identify these ‘toons upon seeing Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble utter the words “Yabba dabba do.”

Family Guy and The Cleveland Show creator Seth MacFarlane has been tapped by network executives to write and co-produce The Flintstones remake, which people find quite daunting, given that the notoriously provocative MacFarlane is about to touch one of the most iconic, family friendly shows of all time.

“One of the first things I ever drew was Fred Flintstone,” he says. “The characters will look the same but the only thing that will change is the stories. What’s the prehistoric version of an iPod? That’s the kind of thing we have to think about.”

But then again, MacFarlane himself started his animation writing career under the Hanna-Barbera banner, doing wholesome shows such as Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and Dexter’s Laboratory before creating Family Guy in 1999.

And just as well, The Flintstones have had its share of controversial moments in the past, being the first animated series to feature a couple sleeping on the same bed and also the first kid’s show to openly endorse a cigarette brand, with Fred and Barney smoking Winston during commercial breaks.

And if there’s one thing MacFarlane is able to do best, it’s the glorification of the stereotypically unbecoming family unit and their splendid mockery of the pop culture. Fred Flintstone could easily go right up there with Peter Griffin and Stan Smith, if it isn’t the other way around.
