The organizers of the first ever Comic-Con Asia have announced that the much-awaited event will finally be happening in March next year.

In a press conference on Wednesday, it was revealed that the event will be held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Comic-Con Asia will feature various Pinoy pop-culture interests like anime, cosplay, games, toys and more.

But as early as now, award-winning comics creator Gerry Alanguilan (Wasted, Elmer) who is widely considered as one of the pillars of the local comics industry has decided not to attend the event.

In his blog, Alanguilan expressed his dismay after finding out that Senator Manny Pacquiao has been chosen as one of the ambassadors for Comic-Con Asia 2018.

“I was disappointed to learn that Manny Pacquiao is one of the people behind the event. I cannot, in good conscience, participate in Comic Con Asia any longer,” he said.

Alanguilan explained that his decision stemmed from Pacquiao’s prior statements that include his controversial comments on same sex couples last year, which triggered international outrage.

“As someone who believes in equality for all, I find these statements reprehensible and dangerous. Dangerous because Manny Pacquiao is in a position of political power that would enable him to make his personal beliefs a matter of national policy. That is something I cannot abide,” he said.

However, the Komikero clarified that he was not trying to dissuade the public from attending the event with his decision.

“If people have no problem with this, then by all means, attend and participate. I am NOT advocating a boycott. I am simply saying that I will not be going. My decision shouldn't affect anybody... It's just another event I won't be going to, simply for personal reasons,” he said.

Alanguilan is known to be active in voicing out his concerns on public issues. His highly acclaimed comic book, Elmer is one of his works that reflect the struggles of fighting for equal rights across society.
