Social media was abuzz after some lawmakers introduced a measure which proposed stricter and stiffer penalties against individuals who do not show full respect while our national anthem "Lupang Hinirang" is being played in public.

Some fully supported this move, while others were skeptical about how this would be imposed in public. But let’s face it, most of us don’t really give our national anthem, which was created by legendary Cavite composer Julian Felipe, the proper attention or respect it deserves.

Apparently, the House of Representatives wishes to change the public’s attitude towards the national anthem by passing House Bill 5224, which updates existing rules from the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, CNN Philippines reports.

Under the Bill, every Filipino must sing "Lupang Hinirang" with passion while also making sure to stay true to the prescribed lyrics and tune of the song. Each citizen should also stand in full attention and accompany their song with a salute by placing their right palm over the left chest.

Those who are prevented by their religion or belief to sing the national anthem are still required to drop what they’re doing and stand in attention for the song’s duration.

And if the bill ends up becoming a law, violators would be pressed with a heavier fine of up to P100,000.
