According to a new survey by the Social Weather Stations, around 11.5 million adult Filipinos were without work in the first quarter of 2014. "Adult joblessness has traditionally been dominated by those who voluntarily left their old jobs and those who lost their jobs due to economic circumstances beyond their control," the SWS explains. If it's any consolation, this year's unemployment rate (25.7 percent) is slightly less than last year's (27.5 percent).
Following a new city ordinance that outlines a child's right to education, the local government of Mandaluyong City will now shoulder children's schooling from pre-school to high school. "If mapapalaki mo ng maayos ang bata, sila ay well-equipped for the future," explains Councilor Charisse Abalos. There's a catch though: The city government intends to obligate parents to send their kids to school and monitor their progress regardless of economic status.
