Soon, Filipino smokers might just have a very persuasive reason to kick those cancer sticks away. [firstpara]

Today, August 10, 2010, reported that the Department of Health, and officers of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines (FCAP), an anti-tobacco advocate, have talked about the imposition of new taxes on the Marlboros, the Philip Morisses, and all the other cigarette brands in the country.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona admitted in the article though, that all this talk remains just an idea and hasn’t been pushed forward to lawmaking bodies just yet.

If the new taxes come to pass though, we’re looking at 5.50 to 7.50 Pesos per stick, and around 97 to 190 Pesos per 20-cigarette pack.

At those prices, we’re sure that it’s going to be a lot harder to bum a cigarette from a friend, and a whole lot easier to stick to the decision of quitting once and for all.

Apart from being a possible deterrent to smoking, the revenues that the new tax would create will also be used to finance the health care insurance system for 5 million poor Filipinos.
