The Japanese aren’t exactly big on the English language. Why did you choose to study it in college?
Okinawa is the southern island of Japan. And there was a presence of the U.S. Army there, so since I was little, I was kind of familiar with U.S. culture, which is why I was interested in learning it.

Your Facebook page shows the United States and the Philippines aren’t the only places you’ve been to. Are you really into traveling?
Traveling is therapy for me. I’ve been to places in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Five years ago, I just picked up my bags and started traveling all over the world.

And how does our country rank?
I think yours is a very unique culture. Totally different from the cultures I experienced in Thailand or Indonesia.

But where in the world is the best?
I really like Italy because of the food and all the scenery. I like Paris—beautiful and romantic. I also like New York and London. I think I kind of like big cities. Asian cities like Manila and Bangkok are nice, too, but they have a different character.

Can you share a memorable travel tale?
When I was in Paris, a French guy chatted me up, asking me out on a date. And I just ignored him. He said that if I didn’t talk to him, he’d go to the middle of the street and let a car hit him. I thought he was joking but there he was running off to the street, so I ran after him, and said, “Okay, okay.” We had some tea, but that was it.
